Amsterdam – In a bizarre incident aboard Delta Air Lines Flight DL 133 from Amsterdam to Detroit on February 13, passengers experienced a harrowing ordeal when maggots from a dead fish fell onto a traveler’s head. The unexpected turn of events left passengers shocked and prompted the plane to turn back to its origin. Here’s a comprehensive look at what transpired and how Delta responded to the situation.

Maggots Mid-Flight: From Disbelief to Chaos

During the flight, a passenger had wrapped a dead fish in a newspaper and placed it in the overhead compartment. When another traveler opened the compartment, dozens of maggots fell onto her head, causing distress among passengers who initially mistook it for a prank.

Delta Response and Resolution

Flight attendants quickly intervened, tracing the source of the infestation to the fish in the overhead compartment. As a precautionary measure, the aircraft returned to Shiphol International Airport, where the bag containing the fish was confiscated and destroyed in compliance with Dutch laws.

Passenger Compensation

Delta Air Lines took swift action to address the situation, offering affected passengers compensation in the form of 8,000 Delta air miles, equivalent to a domestic flight, along with hotel accommodations and meal vouchers. However, details regarding additional compensation for the passenger on whom the maggots fell remain undisclosed.

Reactions by Passengers

Passengers onboard shared their shock and disgust on social media platforms, highlighting the unsettling experience of discovering maggots mid-flight. Despite the inconvenience, Delta’s prompt response and compensation efforts were appreciated by many travelers.

One of the passengers username kelce__ aboard the plane shared the same to the social media platform X mentioning the incident “really lovely to be 2 hours into an 8 hour @Delta from Amsterdam and find out there is rotten fish and maggots hitching a ride with us.”

As travelers, it’s essential to remain vigilant and adaptable in the face of unforeseen circumstances, knowing that airlines like Delta prioritize passenger well-being above all else.
